BALTIMORE, MD, 8/14/08 The Rev. Edward "Monk" Malloy, C.S.C., President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, left, and his nephew John Rorapaugh, 41, of Laurel, MD., shake hands in Monk's room at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Thursday where they met for the first time since their kidney transplant operations on Monday. Monk donated a kidney and John was the recipient of a new kidney in a first ever type of swap that involved four compatible people . John has been on dialysis for two years and Monk volunteered to be a living donor. Doctors hope that this new type of swapping proceedure can reduce the backlog of 80,000 people in the U.S. who are in need to a kidney transplant. Monk left the hospital Thursday afternoon and will be recuperating at his sister's home in Washington, D.C. for a week before returning for classes at Notre Dame. John was wheeled over from his room by son, Andrew Rorapaugh, 18. (Photo by John Long)
